If you are planing on playing just veteran from start to finish and stop there, ranged is probably better than melee due to the simple fact that you won't take as much damage from mobs and bosses and you won't stay as much on contaminated ground.Generally, if you don't have gear stashed somewhere from other characters, it is advisable to go for a 2h rifle build and take the Kraken devotion as soon as you can. Anything that scales more with spirit/cunning than base weapon damage will provide a very enjoyable and easy experience in Veteran. More explicitly:1) 2h Purifier (Inquisitor + Demolitionist) using Fire Strike.2) 2h Vindicator (Inquisitor + Shaman) using Primal Strike.3) 2h Infiltrator (Inquisitor + Nightbade) using ABB/Lethal Assault to charge up Phantasmal Blades.4) 2h Witch Hunter (Occultist + Nightblade) using, again ABB, P-Blades and the poison grenades (Focused Gaze Eye of Dreeg).From these options, P-Blades and Primal Strike are the easiest to level because they have massive AoE right from the start.

Fire Strike is good, ofc, but you need to rush Brimstone.Just stay away from 2h cadence (Soldier +.) because the skill is highly dependent on what weapons you have. In fact, Soldier is massively slow to level even though it is the strongest class in late-game. Ergo, if you have bad luck, Kraken can't compensate. If you do plan to get to lvl.
