Dec 09, 2018  If you are experiencing issues with the Internet on your computer, where it is connecting and disconnecting again and again, it could be due to multiple possible reasons. Below are some of the most common ways to try and fix the issue. If the cable modem is having trouble maintaining a steady. Laptop is connected via ethernet. The internet keeps disconnecting and connecting like every 5 to 20 mins. It would have that yellow triangle on the bottom saying no internet, then either it will come back, or i would have to disconnect the ethernet cable and re-connect it to get internet connection again.

I have an issue with my wired network connectivity from a gigabit switch to a DSL modem periodically going dead. I have tested the connection with a network tester and I get full connectivity across all 8 wires. Before replacing one of the ethernet connectors yesterday, I was reading a weak signal on wires 5 and 6, but I get a strong signal across all 8 now. If I unplug the Cat5e from the DSL modem and plug it back in, the connection is restored.

I have had this problem for a few weeks now. I believe my problem may be in my wiring (see attached diagram) I don't believe it is in the total distance, since I am going about 55 total feet.The DSL modem to Gigabit switch was working correctly when I had the gigabit switch and other computers in the basement within 2 ft of the DSL modem. The only difference was in the ethernet cable, I used Cat5e for the 2ft connection.As far as my setup, please see the attached diagram. The home is prewired with two Cat5 connections in a wall plate in each room, ending in a Phone Box outside the home. I currently have a working phone system for one of the Cat5 connections.

I have rewired the second Cat5 connection from the room. Inside the exterior phone box, I spliced it with a Cat5e cable that I put in that goes into my unfinished basement and into the DSL modem. I also have a phone line that I put in, connecting it to the phone box for DSL connectivity.For the splicing of the Cat5 to Cat5e, I simply wrapped the individual wires around each other and then wrapped in electrical tape to shield form interference.My question: Is the connection dropping due to bad cabling?

A bad splicing job? A bad connection at the wall plate?

A bad jack connector that I crimped on the Cat5e in my basement? Is there an issue with mixing Cat5 and Cat5e? Punching 1 on top of the other isn't going to do you any favors I don't think that it will even work. You could also crimp a rj45 connector on one of the cables and put a keystone on the other and just plug it in if you have the tools to crimp the end on. I suggested the keystones and premade cable because it sounds like you have not pulled or terminated much CAT5.

With the keystones as long as you follow the A or B standard color code on both jacks it will work. And the premade cable is just cheap insurance that the cable is good. Just so I understand before I say yes.You have a fiber trunk cable that runs between two locations.

This fiber trunk cable is usually terminated in a metal panel with st connectors (like a BNC connector). These fiber strands are usually colored. To make a full circuit you need two fiber strands. The color doesn't matter, except you must use the same colors on each end (in your example gray and orange). This is a qwest dsl modem 3347. I don't see any way to set the modem to full duplex. It would appear from some online descriptions of the modem that it is already full duplex.The switch is a DLink dgs-2205, and since it does not have an IP address, I have no way of checking the duplex settings. The manual indicates it automatically switches the duplex settings.I have updated the question, but this setup was working correctly when I had the gigabit switch and other computers in the basement within 2 ft of the DSL modem. Switch the port connecting to the DSL to 100Mbps and see if you still have the same problem. You said you had problems with wires 5 and 6. Wire 5 is used by 100Mbps ethernet, also, so you may still have problems. Make sure your wiring's good or nothing will work.I did have problems with wires 5 and 6 until I replaced the ethernet jack head with another one, probably a rookie mistake in proper crimping.I have the gigabit ethernet switch in my upper room simply because I have 3 computers there where I am often moving extremely large files between them (backups, VM images, photos, etc) so I like the GB speed between the computers.Any ideas how to check or test individual wiring, outside of what I have currently been doing? I wasn't using the right search terms for joining two cat 5 cablesSince the weather warmed this past weekend (and I had some free time), I was finally able to install this junction box outside to replace my spliced wires. This worked perfectly and resolved the issues I was having with dropped connections!
