The tacho signal from the fan sinks to ground for every revolution, the input on the motherboard is pulled high. 3-pin fan and 4 pin motherboard connector compatibility: A fan with a 3-pin power connector may be easilly fitted into desktop board with a 4-pin fan header. Only problem is that it is 4 pin, but my power supply has a 2 pin fan connector. I now have a 4 pin PWM controlled fan that I need to be plugged into +12-volt / Ground connection.

I finally replaced my CPU fan from a 3 pin to a 4 pin connector to hear the difference in sound.Old fan: NB (noiseblocker) NB-eloop B12-3Specs: 1900 RPM with an airflow of 121.2 cubic meters per hour (cmh)New: Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120 MM Premium Fan.Specs: 1500 RPM With an airflow of 93,4 cubic meters per hour (cmh)Cooling wise: seems about the same with both fans,Noise wise: when the PC is idle, there is a 89 dB less sound. (from 3132dB to 2324dB) While under heavy sustained load its still at least 5dB quieter. With case closed, in idle, it makes 15 dB sounds, its great!Pulse-width modulation (PWM),PC Specs:AMD FX 8370 (8 core) 4.33Ghz (O.C.ed)Main HD: Crucial MX 100 SSD (512 GB)Recording drive: 2 TB Western Digital Sata3OS: Windows 10 (X64)Graphics: MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8GMotherboard: Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0Memory: G.Skill Sniper 16,0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 800MHz (11-11-11-28)Email for WoT replays: replay@techdragon.infoWebsite:SocialTwitter:Facebook.
